COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Data warehousing is used to extract, transform and house data from transaction processing systems (e.g., pay at pump, the grocer's checkout, the pharmacy's prescription drug system) into an environment better suited for query, analysis, and reporting. This environment is called a data warehouse, and it is essential for effective business intelligence, which is the conversion of data into a strategic information asset. This course covers a wide array of topics dealing with most aspects of a business intelligence and data warehousing project.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

• Understand the elements of a data warehouse
• Explain the difference between data warehouses and data marts
• Effectively gather user requirements
• Compare Entity-Relationship modeling vs. Dimensional modeling
• Use dimension tables and fact tables
• Compare "stovepipes" or "silos" to conformed dimensions
• Explain the Extract-Transform-Load (ETL) process
• Understand various types of end user applications and ad hoc query tools
• Work effectively on a business intelligence/data warehouse project team

PREREQUISITES:

A working knowledge of basic database concepts. Knowledge of Structured Query Language is helpful.
