Flash vs. substance?

Let's face it: Flash and Dreamweaver are highly functional web development tools that are also fun to use. It is much more glamorous to create web pages with Flash and/or Dreamweaver than to hand code them with HTML, and for many people, that goes double for JavaScript (Not convinced? I used JavaScript to help write this article. View the source code and tell me you wouldn't rather use Dreamweaver.) Unfortunately, this leads many job seekers to the false conclusion that demand for these skills is somehow proportional to tool functionality. The reality? See for yourself:

As you can see, expectations do not always match reality.

The bottom line is this: If you want to have fun, Flash and Dreamweaver will give you that. If you're looking for job opportunities in the Cleveland area, however, you may want to consider learning HTML, XML and/or JavaScript, and then getting some experience using them.
